      Love Stands Test of Time

Gavin and Pansy Reid still enjoying a special marriage after 74 years together.
By Mary MacKay (Written in the Guardian - Patriot Weekend; Saturday May 6 1995; Pg. 3C)

A push on the security intercom button is rewarded with an open door to Gavin and Pansy Reid's apartment in a Charlottetown seniors' complex.
"Isn't it a lovely day," says Mrs. Reid, inside the home she and her husband have occupied for the past three years.
When it comes to days, the Reids have plenty to which they can compare this particularly lovely 24 hour period. The couple has seen more than 35,000 days in their 96 year lifetimes; 27,000 of those have been as man and wife.
A total of 74 years and the birth of three children, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren have passed since the Reid's wedding day on March 30, 1921.
Choosing an old rocking chair from the mixture of new and antique furniture - much of it relocated from their Victoria Cross home where they spent the first 71 years of matrimony - Mrs. Reid settles near her husband to recount their years together.
"We haven't got too much to tell, just everyday stuff," says the 96 year old as she peers over the lens of her glasses to work a delicate embroidered handkerchief.
Their own brand of everyday stuff began when they were born less than one week apart in August, 1898; he in Victoria Cross, she in Millview. As luck would have it, their paths crossed after a young Pansy Myers and her family relocated to New Perth.
"As the crow flies, it was four miles from New Perth to her place," Mr. Reid says with a mischievous smile.
Sparks flew when they saw each other across the crowded congregation one fateful Sunday during a service at the local church.
"I think he just had his eye out for the girls, I think I wasn't the only one," Mrs. Reid quips about their church-place meeting.
"She was the one," counters her long-time husband.
"I'm the one who got stuck with him," Mrs. Reid quickly retorts.
Humorous banter such as this is one strong bond that has bound the couple for so long; another is hard, honest work.
Settling onto the family homestead that once belonged to Mr. Reid's grandparents, the newlyweds set about restoring the dilapidated house and building up their 100-acre farm. The end result was a successful mixed farm, with champion purebred Ayrshire cattle.
"All this work left little time for soft music and candlelight dinners," says Mr. Reid.
"I don't think there was much time for romance, but we were very successful on our farm. Our cattle won trophies for the highest milk production in Canada."
The Reid's own special brand of romantic togetherness was forged with hard work.
"Together we separated the milk, bottled it, capped it, separated the cream - we worked all the time," says Mrs. Reid.
In fact, only a few of their 38,940,000-plus married minutes have been spent apart.
"The only time he had to be away was to go deliver the milk in the morning or to go to exhibitions," she says.
They remained at their Victoria Cross homestead until an unfortunate accident left Mr. Reid with a broken hip three years ago and led them on a path of apartment living.
But their 74-year affair of the heart and witty banter continues.
"It doesn't seem long to us," Mrs. Reid said. "We just wonder where the time went, but that's the way it goes."
After more than seven decades together, summarizing his wife's special qualities comes easy to Mr. Reid.
"There is no better woman in the world," he says of his chosen mate.
"There are lots of other women in the world," she rebuts. "Yes," Mr. Reid acknowledges, "but there's no better."

Under a photo of the couple is captioned: Forever is a long time, but Gavin and Pansy Reid are as close as one married couple can get to being together forever. This year, the 96-year-olds celebrated 74 years of matrimony in their comfortable apartment in Charlottetown. Until three years ago, they lived on the Reid family homestead in Victoria Cross. [4]
