DEATH LAYS CLAIM TO FORMER CHICO RESIDENT
Passing of David Reid in Monterey County Sunday

David Reid, for many years a resident of San Lucas, Monterey County, passed away at his home early Sunday morning, after an illness of nearly eight weeks.
Deceased was a native of Prince Edward Island and was in his 79th year. He came to California in the year 1855 (?), was engaged principally in mining. In 1864 he moved to Idaho where he was married to Miss Lamira L. Lillie. After a residence of three years in Idaho he returned with his family to California (in Aug. 1867) and settled in Chico, Butte County, where for twenty years he was interested extensively in the dairy business. In 1890, he moved to Monterey County where the remainder of his life was spent.
Deceased was a man of sterling character and of upright life and will be missed in the community in which he resided. Early in life he united with the Presbyterian church, the church of his fathers, and during all of his life in Chico, was one of the most zealous workers, and after his removal to Monterey County, he associated himself with the Baptist church at San Lucas, there being no church of his own denomination at that place. He was a man who was liberal to all religious and benevolent causes.
Besides his wife he leaves seven children: Mrs. Summer Hackett of Yuma; Miss Alice L. Reid, Chico; A. W. Reid, San Francisco; D. E. Reid, Chico; Warren and George Reid of San Lucas. (ed. - Bertram McClure Reid left out)
Deceased was a charter member of Chico Lodge, I. O. O. F., No. 113. For over twenty years he was an active worker in this lodge, and for nearly forty years a member of the order.
The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Monday at the home. The services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Hatch of Salinas, who made a most appropriate address. The music rendered was sweetly and simply impressive, one of the selections, "Nearer My God To Thee," being the favorite hymn of the deceased. At the grave the services were taken in charge by San Barny Bay Lodge, I. O. O. F., No. 358, and the last solemn rites of Odd Fellowship were rendered. Many and beautiful were the floral offerings presented by sorrowing friends. The pall bearers were, Richard Bounte, Joseph Veach, William Barbree, Joseph Barbree, E. J. Henderson and William Currell.

From Samuel Cunard to David Reid
      Dated 28th April 1859
      R.G. 15; Series 4; 658

David Reid was born 28 Dec 1832, the son of Alexander Reid and Ann McClure, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. His grandparents (John Reid and Elizabeth Stewart) were undoubtedly the family that had migrated from the Highlands of Scotland in an effort to get away from the oppresive British rule. It is believed they find their roots in the old Robertson Clan of Scotland.
David, in his youth, took to the sea as a whaler, and while still in his teens became a captain of the ship. According to my cousin, Marjorie Reid Adams, he married there, but during an extended whaling trip at sea, an epidemic swept through the town killing both his wife and their only child. Out of grief, he eventually left home and came out West.
The version of this venture which I had always heard was that he and three sailor buddies each captained a small ship around the Horn and up the Pacific Coast to San Francisco, where they beached their boats and sold them for lodging facilities. This was during the Gold Rush years when rooms were scarce as hen's teeth. They split up and David headed for the hills of the Mother Lode to find that gold.
However, Cousin Eugene has come across in his research that in the early 1860's, David went down to New York and took a boat to Panama, where he was to take another boat to Australia. But upon missing his Australian connection, he took another boat to San Francisco. From there, he and another fellow (McCormick) took horses up the coast to Eureka and then crossed over into Idaho. There he worked in the mines where he met and married Lamira Lovina Lillie in Idaho City, 22 June 1865. She was a very tall, large woman (probably 6' 2" and 350 lbs.)
In 1868, the Lillie family along with David, Lamira and Annie (Barbara Ann) their firstborn child, all migrated to the Chico area and other parts of the Sacramento Valley. David Reid started a dairy, but was burned out rather early in the venture. So he gave himself to managing a neighbor's (the Bidwell's) dairy, and did that for nine years. The family then moved to Dayton Road, right near the railroad for a year, and then back to the Bidwell dairy for eight more years (until 1887), and then back to Dayton Road. Eventually, in 1890, he moved his whole family a few miles west of San Lucas to an area called Oasis in Monterey County onto a 160 acre farm. The move was thought to be for health reasons.
It was in Chico that all the rest of the children were born, including my father, Warren Irving Reid, on 30 May 1883. There were 12 children, but only seven grew to adulthood. David Reid died 11 June 1911. [7, 8, 9, 10]
