    In the 1858 Bergthal Colony Census he is listed at Heuboden #16. Johann and his family settled near Gruenthal (Rempel, Herman, 1988). They arrived on the SS Moravian #25 at Quebec City, 1 July 1875 (the same ship as the Heinrich Friesen family) (Dyck, 1992, p. 430). At the time of the 1881 census of Canada, Gruenthal had 14 families (Dyck, 1992). One record says he was born 5 Apr. Bergthaler Gemeinde Buch, 1843, p. A132 states that he was baptized 12 Jun 1850. The Chortitz church was northwest of Steinbach.
