History In Russia, Jacob Giesbrecht was drafted into non-combatant alternative to military service. This was in the Phyloxeria Unit in the Crimea, where they had to inspect vineyards where an insect infestation was ruining the production of grapes. He was transferred to "Alt-Berdjansker Forstei," the Berdiansk Forestry Service where he served for four years; his term ending in late 1901. Due to crop failures and the family's desire that brother Abraham be spared from service, they moved to Canada. Jacob assisted his widowed mother in homesteading a farm. During winter months in Canada he got work as a clerk in a General Store in Osler, Saskatchewan. He later went into partnership in operating the store and also owned and operated a grain elevator and a mill in Aberdeen for a little over two years. He was a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church. His old style birth date was 27 Oct 1875.
