      An Inquisition indented (§) taken at James McLaren's farm on Brudenell River (§§) in Kings County aforesaid this thirtieth day of October in the first year of the Reign of King George the Fourth before me Fade Goff, Gentleman, Coroner of our said Lord the King upon the view of the Body of Elizabeth McLaren, wife of the said James McLaren then and there lying dead upon the oaths of Duncan Robertson, James Stewart, Duncan Stewart Junr., Duncan Stewart Senr., Donald Dewar, Duncan Stewart 3rd, Donald Dewar Junr., Alexander Reid, James Gordon, James McLaren Junr., Peter Keough, James Carroll, Henry Gordon, Duncan Robertson 4th, John McLaren --------- good and lawful men of the Island who being sworn and charged to enquire on the part of our said Lord the King when, where, how and after what manner the said Elizabeth McLaren came to her death do say upon their oaths that the said Elizabeth McLaren not being of sound mind and understanding but lunatic and distracted on the twenty ninth day of October aforesaid at the place and county aforesaid in the dwelling house of James McLaren aforesaid there situate with a certain razor made of Iron and Steel which she the said Elizabeth then and there had and held in her right hand the throat or gullet of her the said Elizabeth did then and there strike that and penetrate thereby then and there giving unto herself the said Elizabeth so being delirious and out of her mind as aforesaid with the razor aforesaid in and upon the throat or gullet of her the said Elizabeth one Mortal wound of the length of three Inches and the depth of one Inch of which said mortal wound she the said Elizabeth then and there instantly died. And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their oath aforesaid do say that the said Elizabeth McLaren by reason of the disease aforesaid being delirious and out of her mind as aforesaid in manner and by the means aforesaid did kill herself.
      In Witness Whereof as with the said Coroner as the Jurors aforesaid have to this Inquisition set their hands and seals on the day and year and the place above mentioned.

      On the within written Certificate

      Know all Men by these presents that I, John McHugh of Lot or Township Number Sixty Three in Kings County, Prince Edward Island, for and in consideration of the sum of fifteen pounds lawful money of said Island paid by Alexander Reid of Lot or Township Number Sixty Three in the County and Island aforesaid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. The said John McHugh has bargained, sold, transferred and let and by these presents doth bargain, sell, transfer and let one unto the said Alexander Reid, his Heirs and Assigns, the within written release and the land comprised therein and all the Estate right, title, property, claim and demand whatsoever of the said John McHugh in and to the same any part thereof to hold the same unto the said Alexander Reid, his Heirs and Assigns forever, and the said John McHugh doth hereby covenant and agree with and to the said Alexander Reid, his Heirs and Assigns, shall and may peaceably and quietly have, hold and occupy, possess and enjoy the premises contained in the said Release without any let, suit, trouble, eviction, ejection, claim or demand of or by the said John McHugh, his Heirs or Assigns. In Witness whereof the said John McHugh has hereunto my hand and Seal subscribed and set this thirteenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty six.

      This Indenture made the Twenty Second day of February in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty three, Between Alexander Reid, Senr of Murray Harbour in Kings County in Prince Edward Island of the one part and John Reid his Son of the same place of the other part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of One dollar of lawful money of Canada to the said Alexander Reid in hand well and truly paid by the said John Reid at or immediately before the sealing and delivery of these presents (the receipt whereof he the said Alexander Reid doth hereby acknowledge and of and from the same and every part thereof doth acquit, release and discharge the said John Reid, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever by these presents). He the said Alexander Reid hath granted, released and confirmed and by these presents Doth grant, release and confirm unto the said John Reid, his heirs and assigns, All that tract, piece or parcel of land situate, lying and being on Lot or Township Number Sixty three in Kings County in said Island bounded as follows: that is to say commencing on the shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence at the South East angle of land in possession of Wm. McKay and running from thence along said Wm. McKay's line North Forty five degrees West a distance of Eighty chains to land now in possession of Wm. Reid thence at right angles a distance of Eleven chains and Sixty links thence South forty five degrees East along the line of James M. Dalziel's farm to the shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence thence along the courses of the shore to the place of Commencement containing about Ninety five acres of land a little more or less reserving to myself, my heirs & assigns forever, the use of a right of way to the shore for the purpose of hauling Sea manure, etc., as has always been our custom in the past, the said John Reid to have all the Stock etc., now on the premises of which I am possessed. Together with all and every the rights, privileges, easements, advantages and appurtenances whatsoever to the said hereditaments belonging or in anywise appertaining or thereunto now or heretofore holden, used, occupied or enjoyed, To Have and To Hold the said messuages and tenements, land and hereditaments and all and singular or other the premises herein before granted, appointed and released or expressed and intended so to be with their appurtenances unto and to the use of the said John Reid, his heirs and assigns forever. Subject Nevertheless to the Quit Rents to become due, exceptions, reservations, covenants and conditions in the Original Grants or Letters Patent of the said premises reserved and contained. And the said Alexander Reid doth hereby for himself, his heirs, executors and administrators covenant, promise and agree with and to the said John Reid, his heirs and assigns in manner and form following, that is to say that it shall and may be lawful to and for the said John Reid, his heirs and assigns from time to time and at all times hereafter peaceably and quietly to enter into and upon and to have, hold, occupy, possess and enjoy the said messuages, lands and hereditaments herein before granted and released or expressed and intended so to be with their appurtenances and to receive and take the rents, issues and profits thereof and of every part thereof to and for his and their proper use and benefit without the lawful let, suit, trouble, denial, eviction, interruption, claim of demand whatsoever of or by him the said Alexander Reid, his heirs or assigns or of or by any other person lawfully or equitably claiming or to claim by, from or under or in trust for him, them or any of them.

      The most interesting story that has survived through the years regarding Alexander is that he supposedly had a severe heart problem, the exact nature of this problem not being known. While living in the Nova Scotia-Prince Edward Island area, he was told to go down to the frozen waters of the straits daily and cut a hole in the ice, place a stout pole across the hole and lower himself into the ice cold water several times. This was eventually supposed to strengthen his heart. (It's a wonder it didn't kill him!) [5, 6]
