    Notes
    • Barney received his B.A. from Arizona State University at Tempe and his M.A. from the State University of Iowa at Iowa City.
He first taught at the Yuma High School, but with the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Nellis Airforce Base in Nevada. While there, he married Mary Sue Wentworth of Yuma on 4 Feb 1945. He was with the 8th Airforce on Okinawa until the war ended. Barney and Sue's daughter, Julia May Reid, was born right after his return in San Diego on 12 Apr 1946.
After the war, Barney was instructor of Art at Arizona State University at Tempe for three years. Wishing to make their home in San Diego, they moved back there in 1949. Their son, Bert Wentworth Reid, was born there on 14 Dec 1949. Barney was head graphic designer for the Navy Electronics Laboratory in San Diego until he retired.
He has participated in many local and national art shows and has been in group exhibitions circulated by the Smithsonian Institute, American Federation of Art, Cooper Union Museum, Brooklyn Museum, and the American Craftsman's Educational Council. He has received honors and awards in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Wichita. He now devotes his time to printmaking.
Their daughter, Julia, graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She married John Miller, 30 June 1968. This marriage was dissolved in 1976. She is now living in San Francisco. Their son, Bert, after serving his time in the Army, married Kathy Hill, 17 Sept 1977 at Ogden, Utah. They live there.

Barney had a successful career as a designer-craftsman. He served as Associate Professor of Art at Arizona State College for four years before he joined the Air Force during World War II. After the war, he returned with a different attitude toward art, clearing away confusion and showing the value of functionalism. He came to believe that useless detail should be avoided, and that there should be functionalism even in painting. He liked to explore and experiment with new sources for aesthetic satisfaction and expression, and did some important work with textiles. He also worked with silk-screen textiles, ceramics and wood carvings, in addition to painting. Sue was a school teacher before retirement.
