History He was residing in Einlage, Prussia, at the time of his baptism in 1823. He migrated from Einlage, Elbing, Prussia to Russia in 1828 (P. Rempel, p. 205). In the 1835 Molotschna Colony Census he is listed at Sparrau #16, where he is said to have come to Russia in 1828. He had moved by 1852 from Sparrau to Berdjansk where he operated a windmill per the 1852 List of People Living Outside the Molotschna Colony. In the 1850 Census he was listed at Sparrau #18. He reportedly married his second wife when he was 70 years old and this marriage lasted 24 years (Krahn , n. d., p. 23). However, his is known to have married his second wife by 1869 as a photo was taken of them together in 1869, so it seems probable that he was more likely about 60 when he married for the second time. One source says he was born in Danzig, Prussia. One source incorrectly says he was born in 1795.
There is much confusion regarding this man - two sons listed here as his (Isbrand and Jacob) are in an 1859 list as sons of the widow Peter Rempel, age 56, whose husband was a miller in Berdjansk. That 1869 photo may actually be a photo of this man's son with his second (or later) wife. That widow Rempel in 1859 Berdjansk is very likely to be this man's only wife, Maria Wiens.
