Washita County Enterprise - 1-4-2001: Deutschendorf clan gathers in Lawton
There were plenty of wild stories and lots of pictures floating around when 69 members of the John Deutschendorf family gathered in Lawton over the Thanksgiving Day weekend. Abe and Sammy Deutschendorf hosted the event which drew four generations of family members from California, Colorado, Alabama, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. Both John and Anna (Koop) Deautschendorf's families came to America from Russia. The original family began on a farm west of Corn with ten sons and two daughters. Three of the brothers and one sister are deceased: Hank, Fred, Dean and Annie Askins. Brother Bill of Foss and Sam of Atlanta, Georgia were unable to attend the 2000 event. However, the other siblings were there for the fun. Abe lives in Lawton. Paul, the oldest living sibling, and sister Lena Snider were there from Clinton. Max drove down to Lawton from his home in Cordell. Larry came in from Alabama and David was there from Colorado.
Many of the family members came in on Friday night and everyone was there for the big banquet on Saturday. Abe said the stories told that weekend were as grand as the family. Abe also commented that 4 or 5 of John Denver's fan clubs still email him frequently. Many of the family members were wearing J. D. T-shirts for the reunion.
A special guest was John Denver's brother Ron and wife Terri of San Diego, California. They attended the reunion with their children, Ron Jr., Angel, Cassie, and the twins, Hank and Will. After the reunion, Ron's family came to Corn to browse through the museum and visit the family homestead.
