History Andrew Thomas McReynolds was born in Dungannon, County Tyrone, on December 25, 1808. At the age of 22 he emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There he volunteered and became an ensign in the Duquesne Grays of Pittsburgh. In 1833 he moved to Detroit and in 1834 was one of four to establish the Brady Guards, the first volunteer company in Michigan. He became a lawyer and was an Alderman of Detroit in 1837-38. In 1839 he was a member of the National Convention which nominated William Henry Harrison for President. That same year he was elected to be a State Senator, a position he resigned in April, 1847, when he was commissioned Captain of the Dragoons in the U.S. Army and took part in the Mexican War under the command of General Scott. He was disabled for life in the dragoon charge at the gates of Mexico. After the war he retired from the army and resumed his profession in Detroit. He was a Prosecuting Attorney of Wayne County in 1852 and Member of the Board of Education and its first President. When the Civil War occurred he was commissioned Colonel of the Lincoln Cavalry, the first cavalry regiment of the war. He commanded a brigade and then a division. After serving for just over three years he was honorably discharged and took up residence in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he practiced as a lawyer. He held numerous civic offices including that of Indian Agent under John Tyler and he served as a Director of the Detroit City Bank. An article in the Daily Chronicle (Muskegon, Michigan) on Dec. 27, 1897, reports on the 91st birthday celebration for Colonel McReynolds who was spending the winter with his daughter, Mrs.F.A. Nims, a resident of Houston Avenue, Muskegon. The rest of this information is taken from the Michigan Wayne County Chronography (F90196.97), a copy of which was sent to me by Maxine Davies. According to the 1850 census records, Andrew married a woman named Elizabeth Brewster from Massachussetts and had at least six children.

McREYNOLDS, ANDREW THOMAS, soldier, was born Dec. 25, 1806, in Ireland. He served through the civil war, attaining the rank of brigadier-general. He was president of the Detroit board of education, and was United States district attorney for the western district of Michigan.
