    History 1st Menn Newton Stammbuch p. 14: "Hier erlernte er die Muellerei u arbeitete einige Jahre in diesem Geschaeft. Im J. 1884 kaufte er sich eine eigene Muehle ... Er war u blieb Mitglied der Newtoner M. Gemeinde obgleich er ziemlich entfernt von hier wohnte." 1st Menn Newton memb. rec. p. 7: joined 1st Menn. 1878.
    He was brought over by the railroad to do wheat farming in southern Kansas. He was the town miller and his brother was the banker. He built a water-powered mill on the Little Arkansas River some 8 miles north-northwest of Halstead, Kansas. This was known as the Alta Mills. About 1907, Peter M. built a mill in Newton and moved there from Alta. Peter lost most of his assets in the 1929 stock market crash except for his Union Pacific stock, house and business.
