    Notes
    • Awhile back, I received a rundown of mother's side of the family from Cousin Glenn Bignell, son of Russell Bignell, mother's younger brother. You can see just from mother's family what size families they had in those days. It was nothing in the late 1800's to have 12 children, more or less. The United States had to be populated somehow.
Mother always talked about Porcupine, Wisconsin, in Pepin County. Durand, Wisconsin is right next door where most of the relatives now live. Cousin Glenn is from there. Since retiring last year, he and his wife, Stella, have been faithful in writing, searching in county records and visiting cemeteries all over. He has enlisted the aid of my sisters and one of their daughters-in-law, Linda Lyle (Greg's wife - son of Rhoda), to help him search for everything possible in Bellingham, Washington. Anyway, as of today, he can trace our family back to the 1800's, and wants to print his findings someday.
Mother's siblings are: Rodney, Rhoda, Richard, Rose, Roxey Anne, Roy, Raymond, Randall, Russell and Ralph. How's that for thinking of "R" names. All of them also had the middle initial of "A".
Mother was the ballast that kept everything together. When she got tired of carrying babies, she avoided the baby-maker by heading for the country every morning for six weeks to pick produce, berries and what have you - anything to earn a little money to keep us in clothes and food. My eldest sister, DeEtte, took over the housekeeping duties. [6]

Since the Bellingham Herald a few weeks ago made a survey of Bellingham’s “big families”, showing that Charles Cox, popular driver at the Hotel Leopold, is the father of the largest Bellingham family, the suggestion has been made that Mr. Cox and his family be presented to the readers of The Herald. It is with considerable satisfaction that The Herald is able to comply with the implied request, and herewith presents Mr. and Mrs. Cox and their eleven children, all of whom were born in Bellingham. It also offers the suggestion that they deserve to be crowned as the champion family of Tulip Town.
