    Notes
    • Dick is the brother that is 17 years older than I am, therefore the oldest. The name came from both sides of the family. Richard, mother's father, and William, Dad's father, who came from Nottingham, England and became the first architect to settle in Bellingham. Henry was Dad's middle name.
Dick was the glue that kept our family together. Dad was in and out of the hospital with his broken leg problems for many years. Mother, with a sick husband and a passel of kids to care for, more than had her hands full. Dick would often cook for us, and as a cook I would rate him a D+. He didn't believe in dirtying dishes. All he did was open the refrigerator wide, get out the huge frying pan and dump all the leftovers into it. Then he would cover the mess with beaten egg and milk - then turn until it would stick together enough to put on thirteen plates. Along with that we usually had day-old biscuits (nothing light and airy) plus milk, tea or coffee. We thrived, but I don't know how!
Dick became a linotypist and worked on all kinds of odd jobs in the printing business. His place of business was the basement floor of the Bellingham National Bank. He shared his money with the family until Dad could get on his feet (literally and figuratively) again.
Later on in life, through the testimony of his wife, Doris, he accepted the Lord as his Saviour, and for the rest of his life maintained a positive image of a beautiful Christian. He died 19 June 1972, at 72 years of age in Quesnell, Canada, where he had gone with other Christian men to build a cabin. Doris is alive at this writing - in her late 80's. [5]

Since the Bellingham Herald a few weeks ago made a survey of Bellingham’s “big families”, showing that Charles Cox, popular driver at the Hotel Leopold, is the father of the largest Bellingham family, the suggestion has been made that Mr. Cox and his family be presented to the readers of The Herald. It is with considerable satisfaction that The Herald is able to comply with the implied request, and herewith presents Mr. and Mrs. Cox and their eleven children, all of whom were born in Bellingham. It also offers the suggestion that they deserve to be crowned as the champion family of Tulip Town.
