History Abraham M. Friesen married Margaretha Isaac, daughter of Johan Isaac. The family lived in Kleefeld, Molotschna Colony, and later in Blumenhof, Borozenko. In 1874, they settled in Blumenort, Manitoba, where they owned a double farm. Abraham M. Friesen served his village as Schulz during the 1880's and his Gemeinde as a Vorsänger. Like his father, he was historically inclined and collected various Kleine Gemeinde writings which were preserved by his nephew, Johan E. Friesen. His library included an 1872 Elkhart edition of the D. Phillips "Enchiridion". His diaries form an invaluable source of information on pioneer life in the Steinbach, Manitoba area.
In the mid-1860s Abraham and Margaretha Friesen had moved from Molotschna to Borosenko Colony in the Ukraine. In 1874 they moved again to Manitoba with six children (the oldest son had died as an infant); five boys and one girl, the only children they'd have. The new village of Blumenort was four miles north of Steinbach where they quickly built a "semlin" (sod house) since winter was approaching. That first winter was very hard for most of the first settlers. When Johann, then 15 and the oldest, saw that his parents would have difficulties providing for the family, he left home and started working to gain some support to help his parents. He worked for French and English settlers along the Red River and when a boat froze in the river at Emerson he was among the young men hauling flour by ox cart from the boat to Winnipeg. They were paid a dollar per bag plus a bag of flour (worth $5) per load. There was great joy in the household when Johann returned with the pay.
Abraham M. had many talents. He became the village repairman fixing shoes and watches. After the first dug wells proved inadequate he drilled his own well in the mid-1880s with borrowed equipment. At that time he also served as Schulz (Mayor) of Blumenort, a job that required handling community concerns for common pastures, mail service, and assessing contributions (taxes).
He read widely from the limited publications available and was known as the best informed in the East Reserve. He sang well and served as chorister in the Kleine Gemeinde. He wrote many poems for his grandchildren and sketched maze-riddles for them to solve. He was a warm and gentle man.
Though his children scattered to Steinbach and Greenland in Manitoba and to Herbert, Saskatchewan, he remained in the Blumenort area. In 1894 they moved to their quarter section (SW 35) near Blumenort village where they stayed the rest of their days.

One record says he died on 10 Aug 1908, and that they were married on 4 June 1856. One record says he was born 18 Dec. Their old style marriage date was 16 June.  [2
