    Health Had asthma.
History Old style birth date was 7 Feb. Born in Ukraine, arrived in Manitoba at age 6. Grew up in Blumenort/Blumenhof area north of Steinbach. After marriage at age 21 he and his wife, Katharina, tried farming for ten years with and near his father in Blumenort, but without much success. Their first children remembered visits and assistance received from their grandparents Abraham M. and Margaretha (Isaak) Friesen of Blumenhof. Klaas became very knowledgeable about horses and became one of the foremost breeders of Hackney horses in Manitoba. The Hackney horse was a new breed combining muscle and trotting. Klaas loved their wide chests, arched necks and high-stepping flashy trot. The Hackney horse had only been introduced to North America some fifty years earlier and Klaas read whatever he could about them. As mechanization soon made horsepower obsolete, however, he was also one of the last to use them. He used them very effectively for his work in his generation. Among his best mares was "Nelly", fondly remembered by the children. But farming was not going well for him so he began a drayage (freight hauling) service from the CNR station in Giroux to Steinbach. He also hauled gravel from nearby pits to Steinbach. His business was growing, so around 1900 they decided to move to Steinbach where he would offer livery service and Katharina opened a guest house. He loved to care for horses and she was a good cook and hostess. Their children met many visitors around the table. It is said that's where C.T. Loewen met Helen, his future wife.
Klaas was of medium height, rather stout, reddish hair and an occasional beard. He was well-read. He read everything he could lay his hands on in this small village: geography, history, plant life, the animal world. He was a storyteller and neighborhood children would join his own for another story. He was a poet, like his father, and could recite an appropriate poem at any occasion. Often, while fixing harnesses, he would sing songs from the old Gesangbuch or whistle the tune in his unique trill. A favorite song was "O Ursprung des Lebens, O Ewiges Licht".
Klaas was a pious man. He was reserved, rather quiet. He was known for honest dealings and keeping of commitments. But he was not a manager and the family was always quite poor.
In 1920, when he was getting tired, when his asthma made his breathing ever harder and his feet and hands were always cold from poor circulation, his three oldest sons-in-law bought the Friesens a farm in Prairie Rose, a new settlement some eleven miles northwest of Steinbach. It was thought a more settled life would at least ease the symptoms. But it did not help. Breaking new loam in former swamp-land, and the severe winters, were not lessening his discomforts. A weak heart was getting weaker. He was taken to his oldest daughter's (Mrs. C.K. Friesen) place in Steinbach, where he died in 1927 at age 59.
