    Architect Cox Self-Made Man
William Cox was a pioneer architect of this area who both designed and supervised construction of the Roth home. And Cox definitely was in the realm of self-made men.
Born in Lincolnshire, a county village in Northwest England, Cox spent his early years working on farms. At the age of 17 he entered apprenticeship as a wagon builder, and four years later he began work as a house carpenter.
    WORKED WAY UP
Once in the field of house carpentry, Cox worked his way up in the trade until he assumed management of large building and contracting firms in England.
He arrived in the United States in 1888, spending little more than a year in New York before coming to the Far West and settling in Bellingham, then Whatcom.
With a natural aptitude for drawing, Cox had adapted his practical knowledge of carpentry to enter the profession of architecture.
    DESIGNED ELKS CLUB
One other building designed by Cox was the Bellingham Elks Club building, completed about 1912.
In a letter left in the box cemented in the Roth Home foundation, Cox listed his birth date as Feb. 27, 1843, but his death certificate indicated his birth date as Feb. 27, 1842. Cox died April 29, 1921, at his home here in Bellingham.
