Obituary - Eau Claire, Wisconsin; “Leader-Telegram”
Glenn Gordon Bignell, 88, of Durand passed away Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Clare Bridge Cottage Assisted Living Facility in La Crosse.
He was born Jan. 28, 1921, in Porcupine, son of Russell and Anna Reinhardt Bignell. He came to Durand with his parents in 1926, where his father started RA Bignell and Sons Company. As the business grew, the name changed from Durand Mill for Farmers to Durand Feed Store to Case Machinery and Farmers Machine Company. During the World War II, Glenn served in the 5th Division of the Army as a medic. After the war, he returned to Durand and continued to work at the family business. On Jan. 28, 1948, Glenn's birthday, he married Estella Catura at St. John's Lutheran Church in Durand. He was always active in public affairs. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served as commander several times. Glenn was a very active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he sometimes went from snow shoveler or president to bell ringer, choir director and in the absence of the pastor, he even gave the sermon a few times. His long and interesting letters, jokes, stories and his magic tricks fascinated young and old. Glenn's presence will be missed by all who knew him. Our special thanks to Dave and Sandy Schams for their dedicated care of Glenn. He is survived by his sister, Ruth Anderson of Santa Barbara, California; nieces and nephews; godsons, Corey Bender and Rob Anderson; many friends and neighbors. He is preceded in death by his wife, Estella Catura; parents, Russell and Anna Reinhardt Bignell; brother, Kenneth Bignell; and sister, Dorothy Byrne.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Durand. Pastor Daniel Pfaffe will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Durand. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. Goodrich Funeral Home in Durand is assisting the family. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to St. John's Lutheran Church.
