Notes |
- My father, Warren Irving Reid, was born on 30 May 1883, in Chico, California. He grew up on the Bidwell Dairy where his father, David, was the manager, where they milked 140 cows twice a day with six milkers. Milk was then delivered to the townspeople of Chico. Butter was made on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. It so happened that they had the first cream separator in the whole valley. It was a real curiosity since no one really believed that cream could be mechanically separated from whole milk. The skimmed milk was fed mostly to the calves and hogs.
Grandfather David Reid died 11 June 1911, just two months after my father, Warren Reid, married Bertha Ramage. I believe they first met when Dad was working with neighbors on a large ranch harvesting grain. Neighbors often pooled their resources, equipment and manpower, moving from one ranch to the next until the total harvest was completed. My mother apparently was one of the hired cooks that followed the crew from ranch to ranch that summer providing the meals for those hungry men. I doubt if there was much time for courting, but at least they got acquainted and followed up later.
About 1-1/2 miles down the road from the family's Oasis home place, my folks bought a sizable farm. Dad began to major in raising horses which he would lease or contract out in the surrounding area. I remember being told he had several large teams (8 and 10 horses) hauling double wagons of sand and gravel for the building of Highway 101 between King City and Bradley.
It is my understanding that when his mother died in 1914, each of the living children received about $5,000, except George, the youngest, who had been a cripple since infancy from polio. I believe George received about $100,000. With it he bought a farm across the road from the homeplace, equipped it rather extravagantly and in a short while was out of cash. He went through bankruptcy and lost everything, even his wife through divorce eventually, and he lived his later years in poverty as a helpless pauper. [7]
