My Oldest Brother, Vernon - by Aileen Schroeder
Vernon was born August 11, 1910 (now Heritage Ranch) to John D. and Ada Heaton Schroeder. He was the oldest of eight children, 5 girls and 3 boys. He died on December 20, 1992 in Templeton, California. He is buried in the Paso Robles District Cemetery with his mother and father.
When Vernon was a small child, he suffered severe head injuries from a fall which left him mentally retarded. He went to school until he could no longer take the taunts and teasing of other children. He had a lifetime of harassment and taunts from adults and children alike. Those who were cruel to him, he would swear at them. Much of the time it was difficult to understand what Vernon said as he had lost most of his teeth and didn’t speak clearly. As for the language he might have used when he fell into the septic tank - what would any man’s words have been? I would not have said, “Praise the Lord”.
Vernon would point or shake his finger at a person and angrily say, “you drive too darn fast. You better slow down or you’ll have a wreck and kill someone”.
Vernon’s early years were spent working with his father on ranches. He harvested almonds, walnuts and worked in hayfields. He cut many a cord of wood so Dad could sell it in town. He could drive a team of mules or horses. This was during the depression years when it took a lot of work just to keep food on the table, especially with a large family.
In the mid 1930s, he got himself a bicycle and learned to ride. This was how he got to work in town. He hoed weeds on the City Weed Abatement crew each summer. He was generally half a block ahead of the rest of the workers. They yelled for him to slow up and he would tell them to hurry up. Vernon started doing yard work for Paso residents and earned a reputation of being a good, hard worker. Once when someone stole his bike, a group a Paso residents and merchants bought him a new one. He loved music and had a radio on his bike which he played all the time. He liked to fix his bike up with all kinds of accessories, much like a classic car owner would fix his prize car. His bicycle took him on nearly every road in San Luis Obispo and Southern Monterey counties. Sometimes he would be gone for two or three days. Most everyone who knew Vernon liked him and helped guide him from trouble. I never heard of Vernon harming a woman or a child. He sometimes struck back at men who picked on him, but he was not experienced in fighting. He often scolded people if he saw them doing something which he thought was wrong.
Vernon sometimes took things too literally. When someone told him to do something, he would say he could do it. I once met him with a wide street broom on his bike. When I asked him what he was going to do, he said a tow truck driver told him to go out on Highway 46 near Shandon and sweep glass off the road from an accident. I had a difficult time convincing him not to go, that it was not his job, it was just a joke.
Vernon loved ice cream and root beer. He would buy a pint of ice cream and sit in the park and eat it. He liked a mug of tap root beer at the Pool Hall. He didn’t drink alcohol until about age 60 or later. Fellows would talk him into having a beer, maybe to see how he would act. Most taverns would not serve him more than one.
Vernon’s home was with our brother Floyd and his wife, Jean. Vernon was in his sixties when Floyd and Jean got married. She was his friend and very good to him. When he could no longer ride his bike, the task of caring for him became too great for Floyd and Jean as they were working and operating their ranch. Vernon moved to a Board and Care Facility and attended Escuela Del Rio in Atascadero, California where he made many friends. Later he moved to Templeton Hills Care Center. He got around in a wheelchair as his hips and knees were worn out. His heart was bad and then it was found that he had cancer throughout his body.
There is much more I could tell. He was 16 years older than me. I worked with him in the orchards and took my turn at the end of a crosscut saw many a day. He could be a hard man to keep up with. I know I speak for my brother and each one of my sisters - we are proud to say he was our brother.
