    Biography - Peter I. Enns (1889 - 1931)
Compiled from information provided by Ruth Enns Brandt and Ella Enns Kroeker.
Peter I. Enns, the sixth child of Isaak and Anna (Reimer) Enns, was born April 15, 1889 on the family farm five miles east of Inman, Kansas. He spent his early years here until about 1896 when the family moved to the Alexanderwohl area near Goessel, Kansas. Peter was 19 years of age when he was baptized June 7, 1908 by Rev. H.R. Voth and received as a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.
On October 19, 1911, Peter and Emma Thurman were married and first lived 1 3/4 miles east of Goessel where their two children, Ruth and Henry were born. Emma, who with her three sisters, Sadie, Marie and Helen, had been placed in orphanages in 1900, was taken from a Topeka, Kansas orphanage at age 9 to be raised by the Henry J. Voths who had lost their only daughter. Emma grew up in the Alexanderwohl area where she and Peter would later meet at a church, and were married nine days after her 20th birthday.
In 1915, Peter and Emma with their two children moved to the Nowata, Oklahoma area where Peter’s parents had settled. Emma died there the same year at age 23, leaving Peter a widower with two children, ages 2 and 5 months. Less than two years later, Peter and Emma’s son Henry also died.
Peter and his five-year-old daughter Ruth remained in Oklahoma for a while, where Peter’s mother helped care for Ruth. They returned to Kansas by 1919 since Peter was married to Katie Flaming November 12, 1919 at Goessel. The family moved to the Buhler, Kansas area where Ruth started school and remembers that her father farmed. Unsuccessful at farming, the Ennses moved to Burrton where Peter served as city marshall for several years. At Burrton, Peter and Katie’s two daughters, Ella and Lynda were born.
He is remembered by his daughter Ella as having a hobby with picture postcard photography. (Peter’s camera, a Sears-Roebuck model, is a family keepsake, which daughter Lynda and her husband, Orlando, used until film was no longer available.) Peter later worked at a lumberyard, and in construction of U.S. Highway 50 through central Kansas. His untimely death in 1931 at age 41 was the result of a rapidly developing pneumonia. His widow, Katie, raised the three daughters alone, with the help and emotional support of Peter’s and her family in the area. After the children were on their own, Katie moved to California for a while, then returned to Hutchison, Kansas where she lived for serveral years. She died November 20, 1978, one week after her 88th birthday; burial was at the Alexanderwohl cemetery.
