Obituary - Madras resident Albert Rempel died March 4, 2007, at East Cascade Assisted Living at the age of 94. Mr. Rempel was born May 3, 1912, in Meade, Kansas to parents Jacob and Eva Rempel. He attended school through the eighth grade. He was raised in Kansas and Nebraska.
On Dec. 4, 1938, he married Lola Fern Simmons in Nebraska. In 1943, they moved to Portland, where he worked in the Portland Shipyards and for Western Cooperage, then 25 years for Pacific Power and Light. He retired from PP&L in 1977 at age 65. In 2000, he moved with his daughter and son-in-law to Madras. He was a member of the Mennonite Church in Nebraska, Bethel Baptist and University Park Baptist in Portland, and Tigard First Baptist in Tigard.
His interests included yard and flower and vegetable gardening, doing latch hook, making "scrubbies" and giving them away, church participation including building, singing in the choir and serving as a deacon and usher. He also liked traveling, eating out, and being with his family.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Lucille and Bob Harris of Metolius, Patricia and Gary Thompson of Portland, Alberta and Jerry Hedin of Portland; granddaughters, Karen Harris, Linda Bell, Betty Thompson, Michelle Hedin, Denise Vincent, all of Portland; great-granddaughters, Stephanie Bell, Ashley Bell of Portland; brothers, Henry and Harry Rempel of Mountain Lake, Minnesota; sisters, Frieda of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, Helen of Hillsboro, Kansas, Viola of Roca, Nebraska, and Marcella of Bella Vista, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his wife Lola, his parents, Jacob and Eva Rempel; brothers, Andrew, Abe and Frank; and sisters, Margaret and Alma.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., March 15, at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland. Burial will be at Skyline Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospital Hospice in Madras. Arrangements were under the direction of Skyline Memorial Gardens.
