============================
Alvin Kroeker was born in Goltry, Oklahoma, on July 8, 1935 to parents, John and Tena Kroeker in the midst of the great depression. The following year the young family moved to the Fairbury-Jansen area to pursue farming. Three more children, Tena, David, and Hulda, were born to John and Tena in Nebraska. In 1950, when Alvin was 14, his mother died of breast cancer after a prolonged illness. His father married Anna Classen in 1955.
After completing high school, Alvin worked as a hired hand for local farmers. In 1958 he attended Grace Bible Institute (later Grace University) in Omaha, Nebraska for 1 semester before being called for 1-W (military alternative) service. He completed 2 years of service at the Norristown State Hospital in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
He met Marilyn Halteman in Pennsylvania at Christmastime in 1959 and they were married on August 5th, 1961. The couple lived near Norristown and Alvin worked as a mechanic for International Harvester farm equipment. They had three children, Lynette, Rosalie and Alvin Hans.
In 1972 the family moved to Nebraska so Alvin could farm with his father. Alvin continued farming for the rest of his life. In later years Alvin farmed alongside his son and he continued his involvement in the farm until shortly before his death, helping with harvest, driving truckloads of grain to the elevator, and attending area auctions to hunt down machinery parts for farm equipment.
Alvin and Marilyn were members of the Jansen Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church (later Jansen Bible Church) from 1972 until 2000 where Alvin sang in the choir and served as the song leader for many years. In later years Alvin and Marilyn became members of First Mennonite Church in Beatrice.
Alvin was interested in music all his life. In addition to his music involvement in church he enjoyed collecting and listening to records, and he fostered a love of music in his children. He also enjoyed ‘tinkering’ with equipment and puzzles. In August, 2017 Alvin got a chance to view the total solar eclipse in Geneva, Nebraska, just a few miles from his home, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Marilyn Kroeker; children Lynette Goossen (Waldo) of Omaha, Rosalie Kroeker (Vahid Khastou) of Seattle, and Al Kroeker (Sharlyn) of Fairbury; siblings Tena Dick of Fairbury, David Kroeker (Carolyn) of Lincoln, and Hulda Kroeker of Omaha; and 14 grandchildren. |
