Notes |
- George contracted polio at only 3 days old, and as a result, was crippled the rest of his life. He moved to Oasis with the family and stayed on the place until his father bought the Veach place for him. He lived on the Veach place, lost it and moved to King City, then he got the place back and lost it again (about 1920). He again lived in King City just north of the high school and cemetery. Somewhere along here, he met and married Grace Lovell. They moved to the Mathew's place in Bitterwater, and later moved to the lower Mathew's place, and this is where Aunt Mary King fell and broke her hip. Then they moved back to King City about 1930 and he and Grace split up. Later he fed cattle for John Maggini (who had by now married Grace), in Bitterwater. Dad and I saw him there in 1941 when we took a trip through there. He went to the county hospital in Hollister about 1960, and died in 1961.
When his parents died, George got half of the estate. Will Reid helped him quite a bit and so did Annie. All of this, coupled with the unsuccessful marriage, didn't make him very popular in the family, especially among the in-laws like my mother.
Phyllis Reid, born in 1924, was dark complected for a Reid, and had many of John Maggini's characteristics, thus it was frequently rumored among the family that she was really a Maggini and not a Reid. However, she was given the Reid name because George and Grace were still married at the time (barely).
Harold, a son, worked in a garage in King City and then went to Salinas as service manager for the Chevrolet garage. Then he had a hardware store in Salinas for some while and now is the manager of maintenance for the county of Salinas.
Cyril Reid and I drove down to George's funeral in King City where he was buried in the Reid plot. A woman we did not know was at the graveside, so we asked Cyril's mother, Bertha Reid, if that happened to be Grace. She said "No", and pointed across the road to a fresh grave with flowers. Grace had been buried the day before in the Maggini plot. [6]
