History |
On the evening of her death, her family had gathered around her bed in the living room and sang many of her favorite hymns to her. While singing, Joy (a granddaughter and an RN) noticed she was no longer breathing and she could not detect a pulse. Death came while the family was singing “How Great Thou Art” at approximately 7:30 pm. It was a very precious moment. |

Notes |
- I have many happy memories of growing up in our family. Having a mother and father who truly loved each other made for a happy home. If the folks ever had an argument, we never heard about it because they never argued in our presence. There never was a lot of money when we were growing up, but we had lots of love and we never went hungry.
Dad always had a cow and chickens, and sometimes sheep and a pig or two. We always had a big garden, too, so we ate well. Mom was a good cook and our evening meals were a fun, happy time. Mom was also a real artist at the sewing machine and thus we were always well dressed. It seems she could make something beautiful out of little or nothing!
Church played a big part in our family. Even though Dad worked very hard, he was never too tired to set the example for his family by attending all of the services of the church. We knew where the priorities were! The Family Altar also played a big part in the growing family.
Our house was like Grand Central Station. Relatives loved to come to the Al Schroeders for a meal, or just to visit. When a new family came to church they were promptly invited to our house for dinner. Many lasting friendships were made that way. I remember Mom fixing a bigger roast just in case! When Mom was already cooking for a big family, a few more people never seemed to make any difference.
When we were younger, Dick always wanted Fred to wrestle with him. It wasn't long until someone would get hurt. Dick would get mad; Fred would laugh. He was always the funny one. Mom would always tell the boys, "If you want to fight, go out to the barn!" And speaking of the barn, what fun we used to have playing in the hayloft after the winter hay was stored. I don't know how happy Dad was about our tromping down the hay, but I don't think the cows cared.
Because our youth preceded the era of TV, Mom read lots of books to us in the evenings. Mom and Dad were both highly respected in the community and in the church. I'm proud to be called ONE OF THEIRS!
