- MOM - THE SEAMSTRESS
Probably the most unique quality Mother had was in desiging and making very attractive dresses for us girls. During the 30's when money wasn't always there to buy material, Mother would rip apart old garments that had been given to us and make very attractive and original dresses. After WWII started, it sometimes became hard to get good fabric, so mother sometimes reverted back to ripping apart better quality dresses and combining colors to make very lovely clothes for us. My first "date" dress was a two-tone dress that was a "Mom original" and I loved it.
There was only one dress that I really disliked, and it was made of newly purchased navy-blue satin. Mother always made us new outfits for Christmas and Easter, and this particular Christmas she chose a pattern with a dropped waist and gathered on each side, but straight in the front and back. The dress made me feel like I had huge hips and at the age of eleven or twelve, I was very aware of such things. That Christmas Sunday we had an appointment at a photo studio to have a family picture taken. It just so happened that I had two styes in my right eye and one in my left, making me most unhappy (as well as being in a great deal of pain), and getting dressed up in a dress I didn't like, to have a picture taken that I certainly wasn't in the mood for, probably contributed to my dislike of that dress. All the other clothes she made, made me very proud to wear because I knew no one else would have anything like mine.
In the 60's, when the reversible pleated skirts were the style, mother discovered how to make them. By then I was married and living in Corvallis, doing my own sewing. Mother taught me how to make the reversible pleated skirts, and a friend of mine who was on the Home Economics staff at Oregon State University found out about it and told some of the other staff members. I got a call from one of the department heads asking if I would be willing to show them how to make a reversible pleated skirt. So several staff instructors came over one evening and I showed them the trick, so they in turn could teach their students. The credit goes to Mom, and I don't think she even knows that indirectly, she taught the instructors at OSU! With all their knowledge, they couldn't figure it out themselves.
We feel fortunate to have inherited some of her sewing abilities. My interest goes more in the tailoring line and because I still like original clothes, there is only one item in my closet that I haven't made. Mary Helen makes most of Mother's dresses now. I made one dress for her, but unless she is there when we make it, it's very hard to fit because of her severe osteoarthritic upper back which she attributes to spending so many hours leaning over her sewing machine, and it undoubtedly had some effect.
