Notes |
- Minnie has a rich family history that goes back to her mother's father, who in the early 1800's came to California in a covered wagon. He had sent his wife and two sons south by boat to cross the Isthmus of Panama, because he had thought that would be a safer route. The children crossed the Isthmus on the backs of Indians. They all caught a boat that sailed up the coast and met him in San Francisco. Minnie's mother was named Mendocino after the town; she was the first white child born there.
Minnie's father, Cornell Mansfield, drove a covered wagon at 17 years of age from Mansfield, Ohio to Northern California. He homesteaded in the Pacific Valley, bought out other homesteaders and eventually developed his land into a 7,000 acre cattle ranch. The ranch was later bought by William Randolph Hearst, which extended his estate from San Simeon to Big Sur.
Minnie was the ninth of twelve children. She is a second generation Californian. She grew up around horses. To this day, she loves them. She remembers seeing Buffalo Bill in King City when she was a child. As befitting ladies of that era, her father only allowed his daughters to ride side-saddle.
Minnie went to Teacher's Training School in Salinas and became a teacher before she got married. She was the principal of a grade school in King City.
In the early 1900's, Minnie met and married Bert Reid, the foreman of the Green Cattle Company. They lived in Cananea, Mexico. That was where she first learned to ride like a cowboy. Because of Indian uprisings there in Mexico, the Reids decided to move to Yuma, Arizona. There they homesteaded 160 acres, farming the land from 1910 to 1937.
Minnie Reid was Matron for Eastern Star during the 1920's and held a position in the State Office of the Eastern Star in Arizona.
In 1937 they went into produce farming, growing carrots on 700 acres near Grant, New Mexico. They employed Navaho Indians to help them.
Minnie had three children, two sons and a daughter. Her daughter, Marjorie Adams, lives in Sun City and comes everyday to be with her Mother. Her son, Barney Reid, a well-known artist, lives in San Diego.
Minnie was a tireless worker, for she went back to teaching in the 1930's in order to send her children through college. She taught "Americanization Work" to Native Indian, Mexican, and Chinese elementary children. She also taught them English. As soon as Marjorie, the youngest, graduated, she quit teaching.
Minnie loved to garden - her passion was flowers. To this day she enjoys fresh flowers and likes them to be arranged aesthetically. She used to have extensive flower gardens. She also enjoyed reading. It was a favorite pastime.
Her husband died in 1950, so she had to sell the ranch. She moved to San Diego to live near her son until 1979. She lived alone until she was 97 years old. She then came to Sun City to live with Marjorie, and has been here at Sun City Convalescent Center for two years. [7]
