Obituary - Richard F. Gifford, 74, of Mondovi passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire with his family at his side after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer. He was born on June 2, 1934, in the town of Drammen, Eau Claire County, to Robert and Marie (Kirkwood) Gifford. Richard graduated from Mondovi High School in 1952, after which he worked in Milwaukee for two years. In 1954, he joined the Air Force, where he served until his retirement in 1974. In his 20 years of service, he served as a staff sergeant in Vietnam, Korea and other bases in the United States. In Aug. 28, 1964, he received the Airmen's Medal for heroism. After his retirement from the Air Force, he drove semi truck for several companies in the area until his retirement due to ill health in 1999. He married Joyce Maxwell. They later divorced. He married Gertie Marum on June 15, 1985, in Eleva, and embraced her children as his own. Richard loved to trout fish, feed the birds, watch professional wrestling and attend thrift sales and auctions. He was an avid Packers and Badgers fan, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Mondovi VFW Post 6711 and Gilmanton American Legion Post 264.
He is survived by his wife, Gertie, of Mondovi; five children, Allen (Elizabeth) Gifford of Osseo, (Allen is a lieutenant colonel currently serving in Iraq), Barbara (David) Franko of Fall Creek, Faye Gifford of Eau Claire, Iva Newman of Wausau and Robert (Rachael) Gifford of Woodville; three stepchildren, Sherrie Saxe (special friend, Wally Winberg) of Mondovi, Larry (Judy) Marum of Port Richey, Florida, and Tim Marum of Mondovi; 15 grandchildren, Zachary, Colin and Nicholas Hammer, Kelsey and Dennis Franko, Kendra (Ken) Riebe and Michael Westland, Kelli Saxe (special friend, Evan Wick) and Kaydi Saxe, (fiance, Ed Fattimann), Jennifer Marum (special friend, Brad), Steve Marum and Dustin Marum, Danielle, Trista and Phoebe Marum; nine great-grandchildren, Madison and Melissa Riebe, Darion and Alexis Marum, Kayla and Amy Jo Marum, Savanna and Dakota Klopp and Briona Marum; two sisters, Iva Bahr of Eleva and Norma Ward of Mondovi; one brother, Gerald (Mary) Gifford, of Augusta; one sister-in-law, Bonnie Gifford, of Eleva; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by two children, Richard Jr. and Karen Sue; his parents; his brother, Warren; and his brother-in-law, Marvin "Bud" Bahr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2008, at Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home in Mondovi, with the Rev. Paul Pillman officiating. Burial will be at Oak Park Cemetery in Mondovi, with military rites at the grave site conducted by Mondovi VFW Post 6711 and the Gilmanton American Legion Post 264. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Friday. |
