History Jacob lived on Hofstelle #6 (farmyard #6) of the village of Tiegenhagen all of his life according to the notes of his grandson Jacob (1890-1989) of St. Elizabeth, Manitoba. He was an active farmer. In 1916, he writes, the name of the village changed due to the First World War because Tiegenhagen was a German name and Russia was at war with Germany. The Russian name Yassnoe replaced the name Tiegenhagen which had been brought from Prussia in 1804. In 1971 when Jacob's grandson Jacob visited the village it had been renamed again, this time Saliewnoe. Jacob kept records of his family, a habit which his son Johann and grandson Jacob Braun also continued. Jacob, however did not keep many records in comparison with his son and grandson.
